The people: The Kodavus are known for their hospitality and bravery. They have a martial tradition, and men are permitted to carry firearms without a licence — a rare privilege. Many officers of the Indian army have come from this small community.
The attractions: Coffee estates and spice gardens; the river Kaveri, which rises here and is home to the mahseer fish; wildlife such as elephants, langurs and macaques; and the Buddhist monastery at Bylakuppe, home to a large Tibetan community. Trekking, river rafting and canoeing draw visitors from all over.
