AP 10th Class Electricity Solutions — In-text Questions

1. What does an electric circuit mean?

Answer: A continuous and closed path of an electric current is called an electric circuit. It usually has a source (cell or battery), connecting wires, a key and a device such as a bulb.

2. Define the unit of current.

Answer: The SI unit of current is the ampere (A). One ampere is the current when one coulomb of charge flows through a cross-section of a conductor in one second. 1 A = 1 C/1 s.

3. Calculate the number of electrons constituting one coulomb of charge.

Answer: Charge on one electron = 1.6 × 10−19 C.
Number of electrons n = Q/e = 1/(1.6 × 10−19) = 6.25 × 1018.

4. Name a device that helps to maintain a potential difference across a conductor.

Answer: A cell or a battery (a group of cells).

5. What is meant by saying that the potential difference between two points is 1 V?

Answer: It means that 1 joule of work is done to move a charge of 1 coulomb from one point to the other. 1 V = 1 J/1 C.

6. How much energy is given to each coulomb of charge passing through a 6 V battery?

Answer: W = VQ = 6 × 1 = 6 J. Each coulomb gets 6 joules of energy.

7. On what factors does the resistance of a conductor depend?

Answer: The resistance of a conductor depends on (1) its length (R increases with length), (2) its area of cross-section (R decreases as area increases), (3) the nature of its material, and (4) its temperature.

8. Will current flow more easily through a thick wire or a thin wire of the same material, when connected to the same source? Why?

Answer: Through the thick wire. Resistance is inversely proportional to the area of cross-section (R = ρL/A). A thick wire has a larger area, so it has less resistance and allows more current.

9. Let the resistance of an electrical component remain constant while the potential difference across its two ends decreases to half of its former value. What change will occur in the current through it?

Answer: By Ohm’s law, I = V/R. If V becomes V/2 and R is constant, the new current = (V/2)/R = I/2. The current also becomes half.

10. Why are coils of electric toasters and electric irons made of an alloy rather than a pure metal?

Answer: Alloys have higher resistivity than pure metals, so they produce more heat. They also do not oxidise (burn) easily at high temperatures.

11. Use the resistivity table in the textbook to answer: (a) Which among iron and mercury is a better conductor? (b) Which material is the best conductor?

Answer: (a) Iron. Its resistivity (10.0 × 10−8 Ω m) is much lower than that of mercury (94.0 × 10−8 Ω m).
(b) Silver, which has the lowest resistivity (1.60 × 10−8 Ω m).

12. Draw a schematic diagram of a circuit consisting of a battery of three cells of 2 V each, a 5 Ω resistor, an 8 Ω resistor, a 12 Ω resistor and a plug key, all connected in series.

Answer: Draw three cell symbols joined end to end (positive of one to negative of the next) to make a 6 V battery. From the battery, connect the plug key, then the 5 Ω, 8 Ω and 12 Ω resistors one after the other in a single loop, and return to the battery. There is only one path for the current.

13. Redraw the circuit above, putting in an ammeter to measure the current through the resistors and a voltmeter to measure the potential difference across the 12 Ω resistor. What would be the readings in the ammeter and the voltmeter?

Answer: Connect the ammeter in series in the same loop and the voltmeter in parallel across the 12 Ω resistor.
Total resistance R = 5 + 8 + 12 = 25 Ω; V = 3 × 2 = 6 V.
Ammeter reading I = V/R = 6/25 = 0.24 A.
Voltmeter reading V = IR = 0.24 × 12 = 2.88 V.

14. Judge the equivalent resistance when the following are connected in parallel: (a) 1 Ω and 106 Ω (b) 1 Ω, 103 Ω and 106 Ω.

(b) Also slightly less than 1 Ω (about 0.999 Ω).

15. An electric lamp of 100 Ω, a toaster of resistance 50 Ω and a water filter of resistance 500 Ω are connected in parallel to a 220 V source. What is the resistance of an electric iron connected to the same source that takes as much current as all three appliances, and what is the current through it?

Answer: 1/R = 1/100 + 1/50 + 1/500 = (5 + 10 + 1)/500 = 16/500 ⇒ R = 31.25 Ω.
The iron must have resistance 31.25 Ω.
Current I = V/R = 220/31.25 = 7.04 A.

16. What are the advantages of connecting electrical devices in parallel with the battery instead of connecting them in series?

Answer: (1) Each device gets the full voltage of the source. (2) Each device can be switched on or off independently. (3) If one device fails, the others keep working. (4) The total resistance is lower, so each device can draw the current it needs.

17. How can three resistors of resistances 2 Ω, 3 Ω and 6 Ω be connected to give a total resistance of (a) 4 Ω (b) 1 Ω?

Answer: (a) Connect 3 Ω and 6 Ω in parallel: (3 × 6)/(3 + 6) = 2 Ω. Connect this in series with 2 Ω: 2 + 2 = 4 Ω.
(b) Connect all three in parallel: 1/R = 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6 = (3 + 2 + 1)/6 = 1 ⇒ R = 1 Ω.

18. What is (a) the highest, (b) the lowest total resistance that can be secured by combinations of four coils of resistance 4 Ω, 8 Ω, 12 Ω and 24 Ω?

Answer: (a) Highest: all in series = 4 + 8 + 12 + 24 = 48 Ω.
(b) Lowest: all in parallel: 1/R = 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/12 + 1/24 = (6 + 3 + 2 + 1)/24 = 12/24 ⇒ R = 2 Ω.

19. Why does the cord of an electric heater not glow while the heating element does?

Answer: The cord is made of copper or aluminium, which has very low resistance, so very little heat is produced in it. The heating element is made of an alloy of high resistance, so a large amount of heat is produced (H = I2Rt) and it glows.

20. Compute the heat generated while transferring 96000 coulomb of charge in one hour through a potential difference of 50 V.

Answer: H = VQ = 50 × 96000 = 4.8 × 106 J.
తెలుగులో: H = VIt, It = Q కాబట్టి H = VQ.

21. An electric iron of resistance 20 Ω takes a current of 5 A. Calculate the heat developed in 30 s.

Answer: H = I2Rt = 52 × 20 × 30 = 25 × 600 = 15000 J = 1.5 × 104 J.

1. A piece of wire of resistance R is cut into five equal parts. These parts are then connected in parallel. If the equivalent resistance of this combination is R′, then the ratio R/R′ is (a) 1/25 (b) 1/5 (c) 5 (d) 25

Answer: (d) 25.
Each part = R/5. Five such parts in parallel: R′ = (R/5)/5 = R/25. So R/R′ = 25.

2. Which of the following terms does not represent electrical power in a circuit? (a) I2R (b) IR2 (c) VI (d) V2/R

Answer: (b) IR2.

3. An electric bulb is rated 220 V and 100 W. When it is operated on 110 V, the power consumed will be (a) 100 W (b) 75 W (c) 50 W (d) 25 W

Answer: (d) 25 W.
R = V2/P = 2202/100 = 484 Ω. At 110 V: P = 1102/484 = 25 W.

4. Two conducting wires of the same material and of equal lengths and equal diameters are first connected in series and then in parallel across the same potential difference. The ratio of heat produced in series and parallel combinations would be (a) 1:2 (b) 2:1 (c) 1:4 (d) 4:1

Answer: (c) 1:4.
Series: 2R; parallel: R/2. With the same V, heat H = V2t/R, so Hs : Hp = (1/2R) : (2/R) = 1 : 4.

5. How is a voltmeter connected in the circuit to measure the potential difference between two points?

Answer: A voltmeter is always connected in parallel across the two points between which the potential difference is to be measured.

6. A copper wire has diameter 0.5 mm and resistivity of 1.6 × 10−8 Ω m. What will be the length of this wire to make its resistance 10 Ω? How much does the resistance change if the diameter is doubled?

Answer: Radius r = 0.25 mm = 0.25 × 10−3 m.
A = πr2 = 3.14 × (0.25 × 10−3)2 = 1.96 × 10−7 m2.
L = RA/ρ = (10 × 1.96 × 10−7)/(1.6 × 10−8) = 122.7 m (about 123 m).
If the diameter is doubled, the area becomes 4 times, so the resistance becomes 1/4: 10/4 = 2.5 Ω. The resistance decreases by 7.5 Ω.

7. The values of current I flowing in a given resistor for the corresponding values of potential difference V across it are: I (A) = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and V (V) = 1.6, 3.4, 6.7, 10.2, 13.2. Plot a graph between V and I and calculate the resistance of the resistor.

Answer: Take I on the x-axis and V on the y-axis and plot the five points. They lie close to a straight line through the origin, which shows V ∝ I (Ohm’s law).
Resistance = slope of the V–I graph = (13.2 − 1.6)/(4.0 − 0.5) = 11.6/3.5 = 3.3 Ω (approximately).

18. Explain the following: (a) Why is tungsten used almost exclusively for the filament of electric lamps? (b) Why are the conductors of electric heating devices, such as bread-toasters and electric irons, made of an alloy rather than a pure metal? (c) Why is the series arrangement not used for domestic circuits? (d) How does the resistance of a wire vary with its area of cross-section? (e) Why are copper and aluminium wires usually employed for electricity transmission?

Answer: (a) Tungsten has a very high melting point (about 3380 °C) and high resistivity. It can glow white-hot without melting.
(b) Alloys have higher resistivity than pure metals and do not oxidise easily at high temperatures.
(c) In series, the voltage is shared, the same current flows through all devices, and if one device fails the whole circuit stops. Devices cannot be switched independently.
(d) Resistance is inversely proportional to the area of cross-section (R ∝ 1/A). A thicker wire has less resistance.
(e) Copper and aluminium have very low resistivity, so they are good conductors and waste little energy as heat.

2. Derive the expression for the equivalent resistance of three resistors connected in series.

Answer: In series, the same current I flows through each resistor and the total voltage is the sum of the voltages: V = V1 + V2 + V3.
By Ohm’s law V1 = IR1, V2 = IR2, V3 = IR3, and for the combination V = IRs.
So IRs = IR1 + IR2 + IR3 ⇒ Rs = R1 + R2 + R3.

3. Derive the expression for the equivalent resistance of three resistors connected in parallel.

Answer: In parallel, the voltage V across each resistor is the same and the total current divides: I = I1 + I2 + I3.
By Ohm’s law I1 = V/R1, I2 = V/R2, I3 = V/R3, and I = V/Rp.
So V/Rp = V/R1 + V/R2 + V/R3 ⇒ 1/Rp = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3.

Heater: 1000 × 2 = 2000 Wh per day.
Total per day = 2800 Wh = 2.8 kWh.
In 30 days = 2.8 × 30 = 84 kWh (84 units).
Cost = 84 × 5 = Rs 420.
