A) Model answer (narrative — “I” as the lady):
I had been watching Shotover Grange for weeks. I knew the Sutton family was away in London, and I knew a famous safe-breaker would come for the jewels. Why should I risk my own neck when Horace Danby could do the work for me?
That night I came down the stairs dressed in a beautiful red gown, just as Horace was busy at the safe. I did not scream or call the police. Instead I smiled sweetly and spoke to him as if I were the lady of the house. I told him I would not hand him over if he did one small favour for me.
I knew criminals fear being caught more than anything. I played on that fear. With a charming laugh I said I had forgotten the combination of the safe and that my husband would be angry if I could not wear my jewels for a party. I even offered him a cigarette to make him feel at ease.
Horace believed every word. Grateful to escape, he opened the safe for me — and in his hurry he took off his gloves. That was exactly what I wanted: his fingerprints were all over the safe, and mine were nowhere.
I thanked him politely and let him go. Then I calmly took all the jewels and walked out of Shotover Grange. When the police came, the only fingerprints they found were Horace’s. He went to prison, and I enjoyed the fortune.
My lesson? Charm and confidence open more doors than any tool — and a nervous thief is the easiest person in the world to fool.

Dhekiabari, Assam — Saturday, 10 p.m.
Dear Diary,
Today was one of the most memorable days of my life! Pranjol and I reached the Dhekiabari Tea Estate this morning. On both sides of the road there was a sea of tea bushes, all neatly pruned and stretching up to the hills. In the middle stood tall shade-trees, and groups of women plucking tea leaves with bamboo baskets on their backs. It looked like a green carpet spread over the earth.
Pranjol’s father is the manager of the estate, and he answered all my questions. He told me that Assam has the largest concentration of tea plantations in the world. I was amazed to learn that this is the second-flush or sprouting season, from May to July, which yields the best tea.
I also shared the legends I had read. One Chinese legend says that Emperor Shen Nung was boiling water when a few leaves from burning twigs fell into it and gave a delicious flavour — that was the first tea! An Indian legend says Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk, cut off his eyelids because he felt sleepy during meditation, and ten tea plants grew from them. Tea was first drunk in China as far back as 2700 B.C., and words like ‘chai’ and ‘chini’ come from Chinese. In Europe it was first drunk more as medicine than as a drink.
Watching the leaves being plucked and carried to the factory, I realised how much hard work goes into every cup of tea we drink. I will never sip my tea carelessly again!

- ప్రశ్న 17, 18 లో ఒక భాగం వదిలేయడం. ప్రశ్న 17 లో people, attractions; ప్రశ్న 18 లో dress, importance — రెండేసి భాగాలు అడిగారు. ఒక్కటే రాస్తే సగం మార్కులే. ప్రశ్నలో ఎన్ని భాగాలున్నాయో లెక్కపెట్టి, అన్నింటికీ రాయండి.
- ప్రశ్న 15 లో వ్యంగ్యం (irony) వివరించకపోవడం. కథ చెప్పి ఆగిపోతారు. “మోసం చేసేవాడే మోసపోయాడు” అని ఎందుకు వ్యంగ్యమో రాయకపోతే రెండో మార్కు రాదు.
- ప్రశ్న 13 లో బంతి గురించే రాయడం. కవిత బంతి గురించి కాదు — నష్టాన్ని మొదటిసారి అనుభవించడం గురించి. ఆ భావం రాయకపోతే మార్కు రాదు.
- ప్రశ్న 19 లో ఫార్మాట్ మర్చిపోవడం. తేదీ, Dear Diary, చివర పేరు లేకపోతే కథ ఎంత బాగా రాసినా 2 మార్కులు పోతాయి. Diary entry మొదటి వ్యక్తిలో (I, me) రాయాలి — “Hari Singh took the money” అని మూడో వ్యక్తిలో రాయకూడదు.
