Dear Diary,
Tonight something happened that I will never forget. Mother and Grannie are in hospital, and only Alice and I were at home. I was afraid of the dark, and the same old nightmare came — the butcher with the knife and the rope. I woke up crying, “Grandma! Grandma!”
But it was Father who came, with a candle in his hand. I thought he would be angry. Instead he carried me to his big bed and told me to rub my feet against his legs to keep them warm. He fell asleep before me. He looked so tired. I felt sorry that I had torn up his beautiful speech for my pin-cushion. He has to work every day and has no one to look after him.
I put my head on his heart and heard it beating. Father is not a giant after all. He has a big heart. I am not afraid of him any more.

Guntur,
15 November 2026
Dear Rahul,
I hope you are well. Last Sunday I went with my parents and my little sister to the village jatara near our grandmother’s village. I want to tell you all about it.
We walked along a path through green paddy fields. The fair was crowded and colourful. There were stalls selling bangles, toys and balloons, and a sweet shop with jalebis and laddus. A giant wheel and a merry-go-round were full of laughing children. We also watched a folk dance near the temple.
In the crowd my sister let go of Father’s hand and was lost for a few minutes. We were terrified until a kind shopkeeper brought her back. It reminded me of ‘The Lost Child’ — at that moment none of the toys mattered to us. We bought her a balloon only after we found her!
Please come to our village next year. Convey my regards to your parents.
Yours lovingly,
Kiran

A) Model biographical sketch:
Albert Einstein — A Truly Beautiful Mind
Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all time, was born on 14 March 1879 in Ulm, Germany. As a child he was a late talker, and his playmates called him “Brother Boring”. He began learning the violin at the age of six and remained a gifted amateur violinist all his life.
Einstein hated the strict discipline of his school in Munich and left it at fifteen. He studied at a university in Zurich, where he met Mileva Maric. In 1902 he got a job as a technical expert in the patent office in Bern. In 1905 he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which gave the world the famous formula E = mc². In 1915 came the General Theory of Relativity, a new interpretation of gravity. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.
When the Nazis came to power, he moved to the United States in 1933. In 1939 he warned President Roosevelt about the atomic bomb, but after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki he worked for peace and a world government. He died in 1955 at the age of 76, remembered as a genius, a visionary and a world citizen.

The Visitor at the Window
It was a stormy night in July. Ravi’s parents had gone to a wedding in the next town, and he was alone at home. The wind howled and the rain beat hard on the roof. Suddenly the lights went off.
Then he heard a strange scratching sound at the window, followed by a low cry. Ravi’s heart began to pound. He remembered all the ghost stories his friends had told him. He pulled the blanket over his head, but the sound came again and again.
At last he told himself, “Ghosts are only in stories.” He picked up a torch, walked slowly to the window and opened it. There, on the window-sill, sat a tiny kitten, wet and shivering. Ravi laughed at his own fear. He wiped the kitten dry, gave it some warm milk and let it sleep near him. When his parents returned the next morning, they found the two of them fast asleep.
Moral: Most of our fears disappear when we face them with courage.

(OR)
B) How did Iswaran’s ghost story affect Mahendra? What happened on a full-moon night? Is Iswaran a fascinating storyteller? [8 మార్కులు]
జవాబు చూడండి
A) The servants chose the fat disciple to be put to death on the new stake because the merchant was too thin. The disciple remembered his guru’s warning and prayed to him. The guru, who could see everything in a vision, arrived at once. He scolded the disciple and whispered something to him.
The guru asked the king who was greater, the guru or the disciple, and demanded to be put to death first. The disciple shouted, “Me first!” The puzzled king asked why. The guru whispered that it was the stake of the god of justice — whoever died on it first would be reborn as the king, and the next as the minister.
The foolish king did not want to lose his kingdom in the next life. That night he and his minister disguised themselves as the guru and the disciple and were executed. The people begged the guru and the disciple to become their king and minister. They agreed on the condition that they could change the old laws. Night became night and day became day again, and nothing could be bought for a duddu — it became like any other place.

B) On an auspicious day Iswaran cooked a delicious dinner and then told Mahendra that the factory area was once a burial ground. He described the ghost of a woman with matted hair and a shrivelled face, holding a foetus, who appeared at midnight on full-moon nights. Mahendra called it nonsense and told him to get his head examined.
But from that day Mahendra went to bed uneasily. He peered into the darkness every night and avoided looking out on full-moon nights. One full-moon night a low moan woke him. He saw a dark cloudy form near his window and broke into a cold sweat. In the morning Iswaran said he too had heard the moaning. A chill went down Mahendra’s spine; he resigned his job and decided to leave the “haunted” place the very next day.
A fascinating storyteller: Yes. Iswaran added suspense, surprise endings and dramatic actions to every tale. Even a sensible, educated man like Mahendra, who did not believe in ghosts, was so affected that he left his job. That shows the power of his storytelling.

The manuscript was discovered by Rowdy Boeynik, a university student, while he was researching papers that belonged to an old friend of Einstein. Einstein’s fingerprints have been found on the pages.
The 16-page document is dated 1924. It contains Einstein’s work on the behaviour of atoms at very low temperatures, a theory now known as the Bose-Einstein condensation.
The manuscript will be kept at Leyden University, where Einstein got the Nobel Prize.

B) Model description:
My Peaceful Place
Whenever I feel tired of noise and homework, I go to the old mango grove behind my grandfather’s house. It is only a short walk from the village, but it feels like another world.
Tall mango trees stand in rows, and their leaves make a cool green roof over my head. A small canal flows along one side, and I can hear the soft sound of water over the stones. Parrots and mynas chatter in the branches, and in summer the air smells of ripe mangoes.
I sit on a flat stone near the canal and watch the sunlight falling through the leaves. Sometimes I read a book; sometimes I just close my eyes and listen. Like the poet who hears the lake water lapping in his heart, I can hear that canal even when I am back in the busy town. This grove gives me peace and new energy.

He sat as still as a stone. When the snake turned to look at its reflection and moved towards the mirror, the doctor slipped out and ran to a friend’s house. 17 May 2157, Night
Dear Diary,
Today Tommy found a real book in the attic of his house! It was very old, and its pages were yellow and crinkly. The words stood still on the page instead of moving on a screen. It felt so strange to turn back a page and find the same words still there.
The book was about school — the kind of school that children went to hundreds of years ago. Tommy told me that those schools had a man as a teacher, and all the kids from the neighbourhood went to the same building. They learnt the same things, laughed and shouted together in the schoolyard, and went home together at the end of the day.
I hate my mechanical teacher. It keeps giving me test after test in geography, and I have to write my homework in punch code. Today, while I was putting yesterday’s homework into the slot, I kept thinking about those old schools. The children must have loved them. They must have had so much fun!
I wish I could go to a school like that, even for one day.
Margie

Ustad Bismillah Khan was the great shehnai maestro of India. He was born on 21 March 1916 into a well-known family of musicians from Bihar. His grandfather, Rasool Bux Khan, was the shehnai-nawaz of the Bhojpur king’s court.
At the age of three, Bismillah was taken to his maternal uncle’s house in Benaras. He went with his uncle, Ali Bux, to the Vishnu temple and listened to him play the shehnai for hours. Slowly he learnt to play the instrument and practised throughout the day.
His big break came in 1938 when All India Radio opened in Lucknow, and he soon became an often-heard shehnai player on the radio. On 15 August 1947, he became the first Indian to greet the free nation with his shehnai. He played Raag Kafi from the Red Fort.
He was the first Indian to be invited to perform at the Lincoln Centre Hall in the USA. He received the Padmashri, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan, and in 2001 he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. Though he travelled all over the world, he loved Benaras and Dumraon the most. He brought the shehnai from weddings to the classical stage and made it famous all over the world.

B) Model answer — I Was Lost at the Fair
It was the festival of spring, and I was going to the fair with my father and mother. I was very happy. At the entrance, a sweet seller was selling gulab-jamun, rasagulla, jalebi and my favourite, burfi. I wanted the burfi, but I knew my parents would call me greedy, so I walked on. I saw a garland of gulmohur, then a man with yellow, red, green and purple balloons, and then a snake-charmer playing his flute. I wanted all of them, but I did not ask again.
Then I saw a roundabout and asked, “Please, Father, Mother, may I go on the roundabout?” There was no reply. I turned around. My parents were not there! I ran here and there crying, “Mother, Father!” My turban came untied and my clothes became muddy. Near the temple the crowd was very thick, and I was almost crushed.
A kind man heard my cry and lifted me up. He offered me a ride on the roundabout, the snake-charmer’s music, a balloon, a garland and sweets. But I did not want any of them now. I only cried, “I want my mother, I want my father!” That day I understood that nothing in the world is more precious than my parents.
