A) Model answer:
My best friend is Anil. He sits next to me in class, and he has always helped me become a better person.
Last year our school announced an elocution competition. I wanted to take part, but I was very shy and afraid of speaking in front of others. I told Anil that I would not give my name. Anil said, “You speak so well with me. You can do it on the stage too.” He gave my name to our teacher himself.
For one week Anil stayed with me after school every day. He listened to my speech again and again, helped me with difficult words and told me to look at the audience and smile. Whenever I made a mistake, he did not laugh at me. He only said, “Try once more.”
On the day of the competition my legs were shaking. I saw Anil sitting in the front row, giving me a thumbs-up. I took a deep breath and spoke without fear. To my surprise, I won the second prize!
That day I understood the meaning of the quotation “My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.” Anil did not do my work for me. He believed in me and helped me find the courage that was already inside me. I am lucky to have a friend like him.
B) Model answer:
“The Unlikely Best Friends” is the story of Gajaraj, a royal elephant, and a small stray dog. Gajaraj had everything in the stables, but he was lonely. When a hungry stray dog wandered into the stable, Gajaraj shared his food with it, and soon they became the best of friends.
One day a farmer took the dog away. Both friends became very sad. Gajaraj stopped eating and grew weak, and the dog too was unhappy. The mahout understood that Gajaraj was missing his friend. The farmer also understood their feelings and let the dog go back to Gajaraj. The two friends were happily together again.
Lessons about friendship:
1. Friendship does not depend on size, strength or appearance — even a huge elephant and a tiny dog can be best friends.
2. Small acts of kindness, like sharing food, can begin a lifelong friendship.
3. True friends feel lonely and incomplete without each other.
Lessons about empathy:
1. Empathy means understanding the feelings of others. The mahout noticed Gajaraj’s sadness, and the farmer understood that the two friends could not live apart.
2. The farmer put the happiness of the animals above his own wish to keep the dog. This shows that caring for others brings joy to everyone.
So the story teaches us to be kind, to value our friends and to understand and respect the feelings of others — whether they are people or animals.

Dear Karthik,
I hope you are doing well. Today in class we read the poem “A Friend’s Prayer”, and I thought of you at once.
You have been my best friend since the first class. When I broke my leg last year, you carried my bag every day and taught me the lessons I missed. You never laugh at my mistakes. When I was sad about my Maths marks, you sat with me and helped me practise. We fight sometimes, but we always make up the same day.
Like Gajaraj and Buntee, we are very different, but we understand each other. I promise to help you reach your dream of becoming a doctor. Come home this Sunday, and let us play cricket.
Your dear friend,
Sai
