AP 10th Class Life Processes Solutions — In-text Questions

1. Why is diffusion insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of multi-cellular organisms like humans?

Answer: In multicellular organisms most cells are not in direct contact with the surrounding air. Diffusion is a slow process and works only over short distances, so it cannot supply oxygen quickly enough to all the cells deep inside a large body. A special respiratory and transport system is needed.

2. What criteria do we use to decide whether something is alive?

Answer: Visible movement such as growth or walking is one sign. But even when no movement is seen, living things show molecular movements inside their cells, carrying out life processes such as nutrition, respiration, transport and excretion. The presence of these life processes shows that something is alive.

3. What are outside raw materials used for by an organism?

Answer: Raw materials taken from outside (food, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide) are used to get energy, to build and repair the body, and for growth. Oxygen is used to break down food and release energy.

4. What processes would you consider essential for maintaining life?

Answer: Nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion are the essential life processes.

5. What are the differences between autotrophic nutrition and heterotrophic nutrition?

Answer: (1) Autotrophs make their own food from simple inorganic substances (CO2, water); heterotrophs depend on other organisms for food.
(2) Autotrophs need chlorophyll and sunlight; heterotrophs do not.
(3) Examples: green plants (autotrophs); animals, fungi (heterotrophs).

6. Where do plants get each of the raw materials required for photosynthesis?

Answer: Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the stomata; water from the soil through the roots; sunlight from the sun; chlorophyll is present in the chloroplasts of leaf cells. Minerals such as nitrogen are also taken from the soil.

7. What is the role of the acid in our stomach?

Answer: Hydrochloric acid creates an acidic medium which is needed for the action of the enzyme pepsin (protein digestion). It also kills germs that enter with food.

8. What is the function of digestive enzymes?

Answer: Digestive enzymes break down complex food molecules into simple, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. For example, amylase breaks starch into sugar, pepsin and trypsin break proteins, and lipase breaks fats.

9. How is the small intestine designed to absorb digested food?

Answer: The inner lining of the small intestine has numerous finger-like projections called villi, which greatly increase the surface area for absorption. The villi are richly supplied with blood vessels, which carry the absorbed food to every cell of the body. The small intestine is also very long.

10. What advantage over an aquatic organism does a terrestrial organism have with regard to obtaining oxygen for respiration?

Answer: The amount of oxygen dissolved in water is much lower than the amount of oxygen in air. So aquatic organisms must breathe much faster to get enough oxygen. Terrestrial organisms breathe air, which is rich in oxygen, so they can obtain oxygen more easily.

11. What are the different ways in which glucose is oxidised to provide energy in various organisms?

Answer: In all organisms glucose first breaks down in the cytoplasm into pyruvate.
(1) In the absence of oxygen (yeast): pyruvate → ethanol + CO2 + energy (fermentation).
(2) In lack of oxygen (our muscle cells): pyruvate → lactic acid + energy.
(3) In the presence of oxygen (mitochondria): pyruvate → CO2 + H2O + a large amount of energy.

12. How are oxygen and carbon dioxide transported in human beings?

Answer: Oxygen is carried mainly by haemoglobin, a respiratory pigment in the red blood cells, which has a high affinity for oxygen. Carbon dioxide is more soluble in water, so it is mostly transported in the dissolved form in the blood plasma.

13. How are the lungs designed in human beings to maximise the area for exchange of gases?

Answer: Inside the lungs, the air passages divide into smaller and smaller tubes which finally end in balloon-like structures called alveoli. The alveoli provide a very large surface for gas exchange (if spread out, about 80 m2). Their walls are thin and have an extensive network of blood vessels.

14. What are the components of the transport system in human beings? What are the functions of these components?

Answer: (1) Heart: pumps blood to all parts of the body.
(2) Blood vessels: arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins bring blood back to the heart, capillaries exchange materials with cells.
(3) Blood: plasma carries food, CO2 and wastes; RBCs carry oxygen; WBCs fight infection; platelets help clotting.
(4) Lymph: carries digested fats and drains excess fluid from tissues back into the blood.

15. Why is it necessary to separate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in mammals and birds?

Answer: Mammals and birds are warm-blooded and need a lot of energy to maintain a constant body temperature. Separating oxygenated and deoxygenated blood allows a highly efficient supply of oxygen to the body, which supports this high energy need.

16. What are the components of the transport system in highly organised plants?

Answer: Xylem, which transports water and minerals from the roots to the other parts, and phloem, which transports food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant.

17. How are water and minerals transported in plants?

Answer: Water and minerals are absorbed by the roots and carried upward through the xylem vessels and tracheids, which form a continuous system of channels. Root cells take up ions, creating a difference in concentration that pushes water in. Transpiration (loss of water from leaves) creates a suction pull that draws water up through the xylem. Transpiration pull is the main force during the day.

18. How is food transported in plants?

Answer: The transport of food (sucrose and other materials) through the phloem is called translocation. Sucrose is moved into the phloem tissue using energy from ATP. This increases the osmotic pressure, so water enters the phloem, and the pressure moves the food to the parts that need it, in both upward and downward directions.

19. Describe the structure and functioning of nephrons.

Answer: Structure: each nephron has a cup-shaped Bowman’s capsule containing a cluster of capillaries called the glomerulus, followed by a long tubule that is surrounded by capillaries and opens into a collecting duct.
Functioning: blood is filtered in the glomerulus, and the filtrate enters the tubule. As it passes along the tubule, useful substances such as glucose, amino acids, salts and much of the water are reabsorbed into the blood. The remaining fluid becomes urine, which goes to the collecting duct.

20. What are the methods used by plants to get rid of excretory products?

Answer: (1) Oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse out through stomata. (2) Excess water is removed by transpiration. (3) Waste products are stored in leaves that fall off, and in old xylem. (4) Some wastes are stored as resins and gums. (5) Some substances are excreted into the soil around the roots.

21. How is the amount of urine produced regulated?

Answer: It depends on how much excess water and how much dissolved waste is present in the body. When there is excess water, more urine is produced; when the body needs water, more water is reabsorbed in the tubules and less urine is produced. Hormones help control this reabsorption.

7. What are the necessary conditions for autotrophic nutrition and what are its by-products?

Answer: Conditions: presence of chlorophyll, sunlight, carbon dioxide and water.
By-products: oxygen (released into the air) and water. The main product, glucose, is converted to starch and stored.

8. What are the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration? Name some organisms that use the anaerobic mode of respiration.

Answer: (1) Aerobic respiration needs oxygen; anaerobic does not.
(2) Aerobic respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and mitochondria; anaerobic only in the cytoplasm.
(3) Aerobic end products are CO2 and water; anaerobic end products are ethanol and CO2 (yeast) or lactic acid (muscles).
(4) Aerobic respiration releases much more energy.
Organisms: yeast, some bacteria, parasitic worms such as tapeworm; our muscle cells during heavy exercise.

9. How are the alveoli designed to maximise the exchange of gases?

10. What would be the consequences of a deficiency of haemoglobin in our bodies?

Answer: Haemoglobin carries oxygen. Its deficiency reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, so body cells get less oxygen and less energy. This condition is called anaemia; the person feels tired and weak, looks pale, and may get breathless easily.

11. Describe double circulation of blood in human beings. Why is it necessary?

Answer: In each complete cycle, blood passes through the heart twice.
(1) Pulmonary circulation: deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium, goes to the right ventricle and is pumped to the lungs, where it takes up oxygen; oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium.
(2) Systemic circulation: from the left atrium blood goes to the left ventricle, which pumps it to all parts of the body; deoxygenated blood returns to the right atrium.
Necessity: it keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate, giving an efficient oxygen supply needed for the high energy needs of the body.

12. What are the differences between the transport of materials in xylem and phloem?

Answer: (1) Xylem transports water and minerals; phloem transports food.
(2) Xylem transport is only upward (roots to leaves); phloem transport is both upward and downward.
(3) Xylem transport is mainly due to transpiration pull and does not use ATP; phloem transport uses energy from ATP.

13. Compare the functioning of alveoli in the lungs and nephrons in the kidneys with respect to their structure and functioning.

Answer: Structure: alveoli are tiny balloon-like air sacs with thin walls and a network of capillaries; nephrons are tubules with a Bowman’s capsule containing the glomerulus (a capillary cluster) and a long tubule surrounded by capillaries.
Function: alveoli exchange gases (oxygen enters the blood, CO2 leaves) by diffusion; nephrons filter the blood and reabsorb useful substances, forming urine.
Similarity: both have a very large surface area, thin walls and close contact with blood capillaries.
