AP 10th Class Our Environment Solutions -

AP 10th Class Our Environment Solutions — In-text Questions

1. Why are some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable?

Answer: Biodegradable substances can be broken down into simpler substances by the action of bacteria and other decomposers, because these microorganisms have enzymes that can act on them. Non-biodegradable substances (such as plastics and many chemicals) cannot be broken down by these organisms, because their enzymes are specific and do not act on such materials. So they remain in the environment for a long time.

2. Give any two ways in which biodegradable substances would affect the environment.

Answer: (1) When they are present in large amounts and decompose, they produce a foul smell and attract flies and other insects, which can spread diseases.
(2) When they decompose properly, they return nutrients to the soil and make it fertile (for example, as compost).

3. Give any two ways in which non-biodegradable substances would affect the environment.

Answer: (1) They remain in the soil and water for a long time and pollute them; for example, plastics block drains and reduce soil fertility.
(2) Harmful non-biodegradable chemicals such as pesticides enter food chains and accumulate in organisms at higher levels (biological magnification), harming animals and humans.

4. What are trophic levels? Give an example of a food chain and state the different trophic levels in it.

Answer: The various steps in a food chain at which the transfer of food (energy) takes place are called trophic levels.
Example: Grass, grasshopper, frog, snake, eagle.
First trophic level (producer): grass. Second (primary consumer, herbivore): grasshopper. Third (secondary consumer): frog. Fourth (tertiary consumer): snake. Fifth (top consumer): eagle.

5. What is the role of decomposers in the ecosystem?

Answer: Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down the dead bodies and waste products of plants and animals into simple inorganic substances. These substances go back into the soil and are used again by plants. So decomposers recycle nutrients and also keep the environment clean.

6. What is ozone and how does it affect any ecosystem?

Answer: Ozone (O3) is a molecule made of three atoms of oxygen. At ground level it is a deadly poison, but in the upper atmosphere the ozone layer shields the earth from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. UV radiation can cause skin cancer in humans and damages plants and other organisms. So the ozone layer protects all ecosystems; its depletion would harm them.

7. How can you help in reducing the problem of waste disposal? Give any two methods.

Answer: (1) Separate the waste at home into biodegradable and non-biodegradable bins, and make compost from kitchen waste.
(2) Reduce the use of plastic: carry cloth bags, and reuse and recycle materials such as paper, glass and metal.

AP 10th Class Our Environment Solutions — Exercise Questions and Answers

1. Which of the following groups contain only biodegradable items? (a) Grass, flowers and leather (b) Grass, wood and plastic (c) Fruit-peels, cake and lime-juice (d) Cake, wood and grass

Answer: (a), (c) and (d). Group (b) contains plastic, which is non-biodegradable.

2. Which of the following constitute a food chain? (a) Grass, wheat and mango (b) Grass, goat and human (c) Goat, cow and elephant (d) Grass, fish and goat

Answer: (b) Grass, goat and human.

3. Which of the following are environment-friendly practices? (a) Carrying cloth-bags to put purchases in while shopping (b) Switching off unnecessary lights and fans (c) Walking to school instead of getting your mother to drop you on her scooter (d) All of the above

Answer: (d) All of the above.

4. What will happen if we kill all the organisms in one trophic level?

Answer: The food chain will break. For example, if all herbivores are killed: the organisms of the next level (carnivores) will not get food and will die or decrease; and the plants (producers) will grow without control. The balance of the ecosystem will be disturbed.

5. Will the impact of removing all the organisms in a trophic level be different for different trophic levels? Can the organisms of any trophic level be removed without causing any damage to the ecosystem?

Answer: Yes, the impact will be different. Removing producers would be the most harmful, because all other organisms depend on them for food and energy; the whole ecosystem would collapse. Removing herbivores would make carnivores starve and plants grow unchecked. Removing top carnivores would make the number of herbivores increase, and they may overgraze. Removing decomposers would stop the recycling of nutrients and waste would pile up. So the organisms of no trophic level can be removed without damaging the ecosystem.

6. What is biological magnification? Will the levels of this magnification be different at different levels of the ecosystem?

Answer: Biological magnification is the increase in the concentration of harmful, non-biodegradable chemicals (such as pesticides) at each higher trophic level of a food chain. These chemicals are not broken down or excreted, so they accumulate in the bodies of organisms. Yes, the levels are different: the concentration is lowest in producers and highest in the top consumers. Since human beings are at the top of many food chains, the maximum concentration accumulates in our bodies.

7. What are the problems caused by the non-biodegradable wastes that we generate?

Answer: (1) They remain in the environment for a long time and pollute the soil and water.
(2) Plastic wastes block drains and sewers, causing water-logging and breeding of mosquitoes.
(3) Animals that swallow plastic bags may choke and die.
(4) Harmful chemicals enter food chains and undergo biological magnification.
(5) They reduce soil fertility.

8. If all the waste we generate is biodegradable, will this have no impact on the environment?

Answer: It will still have an impact, though less harmful. If biodegradable waste is generated in very large amounts, decomposers cannot break it down quickly. The heaps of waste rot, produce a foul smell and harmful gases, attract flies and spread diseases. So waste must be managed properly (for example, by composting) even if it is biodegradable.

9. Why is damage to the ozone layer a cause for concern? What steps are being taken to limit this damage?

Answer: The ozone layer absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. If it is damaged, more UV radiation reaches the earth, causing skin cancer and eye problems (cataract) in humans, and harming plants, animals and aquatic life.
Steps: the damage is mainly caused by CFCs used in refrigerators and fire extinguishers. In 1987 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) succeeded in getting an agreement to freeze CFC production at 1986 levels. Now CFC-free refrigerators are made, and the use of such chemicals is being phased out worldwide.

10th Class Our Environment Important Questions

1. Which gas damages the ozone layer?

Answer: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

2. What percentage of energy is passed on to the next trophic level?

Answer: About 10%.

3. Name the organisms at the first trophic level.

Answer: Producers (green plants).

4. Give one example of a non-biodegradable substance.

Answer: Plastic (or polythene, DDT, glass).

1. Why is the flow of energy in an ecosystem said to be unidirectional?

Answer: Energy captured by producers from the sun moves to herbivores and then to carnivores. The energy that passes to a higher level never comes back to the lower level, and energy lost as heat cannot be used again by plants. So energy flows in one direction only.

2. Why do food chains usually have only three or four trophic levels?

Answer: Only about 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next. After three or four levels, the energy available becomes so small that it cannot support another level of organisms.

3. Differentiate between a food chain and a food web.

Answer: A food chain is a single straight sequence of organisms in which each one eats the one below it. A food web is a network of many interconnected food chains in an ecosystem. A food web gives more stability because an organism has more than one source of food.

4. Why are bacteria and fungi called decomposers? Write their importance.

Answer: They break down the complex organic substances of dead plants and animals into simple inorganic substances. Importance: they return nutrients to the soil for reuse by plants and clean the environment by removing dead remains.

1. Explain the 10 percent law of energy flow with an example and an energy pyramid.

Answer: Example food chain: grass, deer, lion. If producers (grass) trap 10000 J of energy, only about 1000 J reaches the herbivores (deer), about 100 J reaches the carnivores (lion) and about 10 J would be available at the next level. At each level about 90% of the energy is used for life processes and lost as heat. Drawing: a pyramid with producers at the broad base and top consumers at the narrow top.

2. What is biological magnification? Explain with an example.

Answer: The accumulation of non-biodegradable chemicals in increasing concentration at successive trophic levels is biological magnification. Example: a pesticide such as DDT sprayed on crops is washed into ponds. Small organisms (plankton) take it in; fish eat many plankton and collect more of it; birds or humans eating the fish collect the highest amount. These chemicals are not excreted, so they keep accumulating and harm the top consumers.

3. Suggest ways to manage garbage in our homes and towns.

Answer: (1) Segregate waste at source into biodegradable (green bin) and non-biodegradable (blue bin).
(2) Convert kitchen and garden waste into compost or use it for biogas.
(3) Reduce, reuse and recycle: avoid single-use plastic, carry cloth bags, recycle paper, glass and metal.
(4) Dispose of hazardous waste separately and avoid burning garbage in the open.

4. Write about the components of an ecosystem.

Answer: An ecosystem has two kinds of components.
(1) Abiotic (non-living) components: sunlight, temperature, rainfall, wind, soil and minerals.
(2) Biotic (living) components: producers (green plants that make food by photosynthesis), consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and parasites) and decomposers (bacteria and fungi that break down dead matter).
The biotic and abiotic components interact with each other, and energy and nutrients move through them.
