2. What is the thermit reaction? Where is it used?

జవాబు చూడండి
Answer: The reaction of iron(III) oxide with aluminium, which gives out so much heat that iron is produced in the molten state: Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3 + heat. It is used to join (weld) railway tracks and cracked machine parts.

3. Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity in the molten state or in solution but not in the solid state?

జవాబు చూడండి
Answer: In the solid state the ions are held in fixed positions and cannot move. In the molten state or in water the ions become free to move and carry current.

4. Why is hydrogen gas usually not evolved when a metal reacts with nitric acid?

జవాబు చూడండి
Answer: Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises the hydrogen produced to water and itself is reduced to oxides of nitrogen. Only magnesium and manganese give hydrogen with very dilute nitric acid.

4 మార్కుల ప్రశ్నలు

1. Explain the electrolytic refining of copper with a labelled diagram.

జవాబు చూడండి
Answer: A thick block of impure copper is made the anode and a thin strip of pure copper is made the cathode. The electrolyte is acidified copper sulphate solution. When current is passed, pure copper dissolves from the anode into the electrolyte, and an equal amount of pure copper from the electrolyte is deposited on the cathode. Soluble impurities go into the solution; insoluble impurities settle below the anode as anode mud.
తెలుగులో: చిత్రంలో ఆనోడ్ (అశుద్ధ రాగి), కాథోడ్ (శుద్ధ రాగి), CuSO4 ద్రావణం, ఆనోడ్ మడ్ గుర్తించాలి.
